Aleta held her stomach as no sound came out of her mouth. Her cheeks were red and her eyes were streaming tears.

“I don’t know why you think this is so funny,” Georgie said. “I could be holding the key to Chef Efraim’s murder and you are laughing at me. I had no alternative. I had to climb out the window.”

“I’d have paid money to be the fly on the wall in their house after you guys left!” Aleta whooped. “They had to wonder what happened to you. You never came out of the bathroom!” She rocked forward as she laughed.

“I’m pretty sure they figured out I went through the window. I left it wide open.” Georgie fussed. “But now I’ve got a problem,” Georgie explained to Aleta what Obie had said about the evidence being as good as nothing.

“He might have a point. Maybe you could mail it to the police station. Anonymous,” Aleta said as she picked up another sugar wafer cookie from the plate in between her and Georgie. They were sitting on Aleta’s back porch. Bodhi sat perfectly still in front of Aleta hoping his sad expression would win her over and there would be a piece of cookie for him. Freckles, Aleta’s cat was lounging in a square of afternoon sunshine.

“That’s a great idea!” Georgie clapped. “I’ll do it. I’ll wear gloves and send it priority mail so it gets there the very next day. Great idea, sis. I could never go to the French Riviera without you.”

“What?”

Georgie took another cookie and with a shrug of her shoulders and roll of her eyes she told Aleta about Obie’s offer.

“Was he serious?” Aleta stared at her sister.

“Yes.”

“Are you considering it?”

“Aleta, don’t you ever listen to me? I just said that I would never go without you. So no, I am not considering it.” Georgie looked out at the pretty flowers in Aleta’s yard.

“Well, if you wanted to go you could. You have my blessing,” Aleta said.

“I don’t want to go.”

“What woman in her right mind doesn’t want to go to the French Riviera? The culture? The clothes? The food, my gosh, Georgie, the food! You’re crazy.”

“Not certifiably,” said Georgie.

“Don’t play coy with me Georgie Kaye. What’s the real reason you won’t go?”

Georgie didn’t say anything at first and instead leaned down to scratch Bodhi behind his ears and under his chin. Then she took a deep breath.

“You didn’t see the look in Obie’s eyes. It wouldn’t be just a trip to the French Riviera. It would be a honeymoon without the marriage,” Georgie confessed. “There has only been Stan, Aleta.”

“I know.” Her sister patted her hand.

“If you can believe it, I’m just not ready to move on.” She took another cookie. “If only that Stanley Toon knew what I was giving up for him. He’d probably still be the silly, selfish, beefcake I’ve always known.” She shrugged and looked at Aleta.

“Probably.” Aleta smiled. “Have you told Obie that?”

“No. He’s got some meetings and things for the next couple of days.
